Romeo the baby bulldog...
Back by his family home near Caddo Lake in the Louisiana bayou off Mooringsport, our main character Vincente Bonaventura had rescued a starving black and white bulldog puppy which accompanies him and his daughter on their travels. Vince has a "matching thing" so he names the puppy Romeo to match his daughter's name (Julietta) and buys them both black and white saddle shoes to match the dog's spots.
Emma, Julie's mother, died from Cholera the same year Julie was born, so the puppy is Vince's comfort and crying pillow. A puppy and an infant are just the comfort Vince needs right now. Emma was his wife, but also his best friend and he truly misses her. He does not find a girlfriend until Julie is almost eight.
This book takes place from 1950 to 1959 and contains as much memorabilia from the fifties as possible. It is the first volume in a historical progression into the sixties and beyond. In our successive novels one will see the slow evolution of Julietta Bonaventura into a smart, talented hippie chick and politically aware observer of all the Civil Rights changes at the end of the fifties and into the Age of Aquarius.
